When I was a little girl, I went to the games with my dad and my grandpa. Then, when I was in seventh grade, I asked if I could start walking to the games with my friends. There’d be a whole slew of kids from the west side, and we’d cross the viaduct, stop at Wendy’s to get something to eat, and walk to the game. It was a tradition. At least for 10 weeks of every single year, everybody was together tailgating and seeing friends.

Later, I was dating Mike, and we had only been together for a few months. Every Friday we met up and tailgated with our friends. On this particular night at the end of September, we were playing Austintown Fitch. We stopped at a convenience store on the way to the game.

Every week, Mike would give me something that he bought from a lady who made pins and crafts for the games. He got out of the car to go into the store and said, “There’s something for you under the seat.” And I thought, “Another pin that says Go Tigers.” So I pulled a box wrapped in gold paper from underneath the seat. I opened it and it was a diamond ring.

I get out of the car, and I’m crying, of course, and he’s looking at me and laughing. I could not believe what had just happened.

We went to the tailgate party and told everybody. I didn’t call my mom to tell her [I’d gotten engaged] until halftime. It was so close to kickoff when we got to the stadium, and we weren’t going to miss kickoff.

So, here we are, 20 years later with our season tickets and two kids who have gone through the program.

The Austintown Fitch game still holds a special place in my heart.
